On New Years Eve I ran across an idea about a unique way to capture joyful memories and stories throughout the year. I know that lack of gratitude and general grumpiness are enemies of peace so I thought creating a joy jar would be a great way to focus on finding peace in the everyday of my life.
The concept is a simple one. I took an empty jar, some washi tape and a sharpie to create the jar. I also cut strips of plain scrap paper which I placed in an envelope in my nightstand. At least once a week, sometimes more, I sit in bed and reflect on the things that have made me smile or laugh over the last several days. I write each item down, fold it up and place it in the jar. I’ve also printed instagram pictures that make me particularly joyful and have starting being sure to include the date of the item.
When I first started this practice it took intentional thought. I have found the more that I focus on the items that bring me joy, the more naturally this reflective practice becomes a part of each day. What I love about my Joy Jar is that it
forces encourages and teaches me to hold on to the little things. It may seem silly but it seems to me that writing things down and putting them in my jar has helped me to feel more peace and joy in the everyday. I cannot wait for December 31st to open the jar to remember the great things that have happened in 2014 and I need to upgrade to a larger jar already!
