Within the next hour we will kick out 2012 and welcome 2013 with the excitement and anticipation that comes with a new year. 2012 was the first year I participated in the One Word movement choosing one word that I hoped would describe the coming year. I chose “Bold” and I think in many ways I was able to showcase that word, but in many ways I fell short.
Such is the life of New Year goals or resolutions. Every year there will be things we hit, and things we miss. I like the idea of choosing a word rather than specific tasks because it creates an attitude towards life rather than just more things I have to do.
As I’ve thought about what 2013 will look like two words come to mind and I could just not decide between the two. I am drawn to simple and discipline. So I am going to cheat and chose two words for One Word 2013.
Dictionary.com defines discipline as:
activity, exercise, or a regimen that develops or improves a skill; training: A daily stint at the typewriter is excellent discipline for a writer.
behavior in accord with rules of conduct; behavior and order maintained by training and control: good discipline in an army.
And simple as:
easy to understand, deal with, use, etc.: a simple matter; simple tools.; not elaborate or artificial; plain: a simple style.; not ornate or luxurious; unadorned: a simple gown; unaffected; unassuming; modest: a simple manner.; not complicated: a simple design.
I will spend some time reflecting on the specifics of what this will look like and outlining some specific goals within these words. But when it’s all said and done I hope that my year 2013 will show a growth in simplicity and discipline.
